IFS - International Food Standard

IFS - International Food Standard

The IFS (International Food Standard) was designed for food manufacturers and in particular for private labels. It was developed by the Federation of German Retailers (HDE) and the French Federation of Commerce and Distribution (FCD) - now IFS Management GmbH. The standard is now accepted worldwide and is becoming more and more popular every year. It is approved by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI).

The requirements of the IFS standard mostly correspond to the BRC requirements. The main differences concern the method of the final assessment of the manufacturer. The standard is available free of charge at: www.ifs-certification.com.

TUV NORD Polska is accredited by the Polish Centre for Accreditation for the IFS Standard as part of the Product Certification Body AC 103.

     AC 103

IFS covers the following areas of a production plant

  • Quality Management System
  • Management Responsibility
  • Resource Management
  • Manufacturing Processes
  • Measurement, Analysis, Improvement
  • Food defence and external inspections

IFS standard audit

Audits are carried out at the time agreed between TÜV NORD Polska and the customer. Audit duration depends on the size and type of production plant.

The audit ends with a report, and in the case of possible non-conformities, a list of them is produced. On the basis of the list of non-conformities, the audited company prepares a plan of corrective actions with deadlines for their implementation. The report and the list of non-conformities along with the plan of corrective actions is sent to the certification body, where a decision is made to issue a certificate.

The IFS certificate is issued for a period of 12 months and, depending on the result of the audit, for a basic level or higher.

Notification of crisis and other situations

In accordance with the requirement of the International Featured Standards, if circumstances change within a company that may affect the continuity of certification,  the company is required to notify the Certification Body within 3 working days using a dedicated email address: Food Alert

Such circumstances include:

  • legal proceedings concerning the safety or legality of a product
  • product recall action
  • significant damage to the plant, e.g. a natural disaster such as flooding, or damage by fire
